Insulation

Insulation is a barrier between the exterior wall of a building and the interior finish wall as well as attics, crawl spaces and basements.

During the winter months in cold climates it is designed to act as a barrier preventing cold exterior air from entering the building through the walls, as well as keeping warm air (heat) inside.
During summer months insulation keeps the building cold by not allowing the cold air (air conditioning) to transfer through interior walls and ceilings as well as keeps warm outside air outside the building.

Having the proper amount and type of insulation will make your building more energy efficient, reduce the demands of heating and cooling as well as add comfort and reduce sound intensity.

Insulation is a great way to improve the energy efficiency in your home or office. Insulation not only keeps your house warm in winter and cool in summer; it also helps in minimizing your carbon footprint, which is great news for the environment and your electricity bill!

Types of Insulation

There are a wide variety of insulation forms ranging from cellulose, wool, polystyrene and urethane foam. These can be in the form of bats or batting, loose or blown in and spray foam (expanding and non-expanding) Depending on where you are installing you may want to consider each one of these applications.

Different types of insulation with different uses:

  • Thermal Insulation aids in warming/cooling a building by reducing the rate of heat transfer.
  • Acoustic Insulation improves comfort by reducing noise transfer between walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Reflective Foil and Vapour Barrier Insulation acts as a second defence to protect your home or office from rain, dust, wind and moisture.

The above insulation products can also work together to give your home maximum energy efficiency. Our friendly team can advise you on the type of insulation that is suitable for your home, office or factory.

Insulation Ratings

Insulation is measured by its R value or effectiveness to stop heat loss or heat gain. The higher the R values of insulation the greater the insulating effectiveness.

A typical American home should have attic insulation with an R value of 38.
R values for walls will vary depending on your type of construction, climate and building materials. A good standard is R 36 for new construction homes.

Colder climates will require higher R values but, that is not to say warmer climates don’t benefit from higher R values to keep cool air indoors and less heat transference from the outdoors.

Adding insulation to your existing home, office or commercial building can be relatively inexpensive and effective at lowering your heating / cooling bills.

Simple water heater insulation blankets help keep your water heater from having to work harder at keeping your domestic water warm all day long.

If you live in a warm climate, keep in mind your air conditioner is in constant battle with your water heater every day. One is keeping your interior cool the other working to keep your water warm
No matter what type of insulation you use, adding the proper amount is always going to help you go green, reduce your energy cost and increase the value of your property.
