When it comes to their homes, Americans care about comfort, health, safety, resale values, and lower utilities. And in the commercial world, many businesses are willing to pay more for a third-party green certified space.
Studies are showing that improved health, well-being, performance, and satisfaction, along with increase property values and reduced crime are directly influenced by sustainable building and green infrastructure.
By 2016, green building is predicted to make up 55% of commercial and institutional construction, and 33% of residential construction.
If these predictions are to reach reality, though, there are 5 key areas that design and building professionals should keep in mind:
Multifamily housing. Multifamily housing offers big opportunities, since it influences both residential and commercial development.
Think Big. Designers and builders should not only look at individual projects, but consider how they can improve entire blocks, neighborhoods, or even communities.
Don’t Overlook the Present. While innovation and progressive technology is important, we need to put proper attention on current research and technologies.
Think All in One. There is no divide between good-looking, high-quality, and high-performance design. A great design, encompasses technical practice with creative innovation.
Build more Data. Continue to record performance data. More research can lead changes in design, operations, education, health, and financing.
What is the future of Green Building? It seems its fate is up to the designers and builders. But if they full embrace these developments, we could see a financial increase to $248 billion in green commercial building and $105 billion in green residential building by 2016.
